Betty's Battle Against Cancer

Betty is just 2½ years old and is facing a battle no child or family should ever have to endure.

She has stage 4 metastatic neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. On 9 July, Betty’s family received the devastating news that she had relapsed for a second time. Alongside that came the heartbreaking news that her cancer is no longer considered curable within the treatment options currently available to her through the NHS and that care in the UK can now only aim to provide stability. Betty is therefore considered terminal.

But Betty is fiercely strong, and her family are not ready to give up hope.

After exploring further options, they have been offered the possibility of treatment at a hospital in Barcelona which is not available in the UK. The hospital is ready to treat Betty and the treatment is being pursued in the hope of achieving what her family desperately wants — a chance for Betty to overcome her cancer.

The enormous obstacle standing in their way is the cost. Betty’s overseas treatment was originally expected to cost £630,000, but this has now been reduced to £520,000.

Her family and supporters are therefore fundraising to give Betty every possible chance. The original appeal asked 315,000 people to donate just £2 each, demonstrating how even a small donation, when multiplied across a community, can make an extraordinary difference.
