Odyssey Challenging Cancer

About Odyssey

Odyssey Charity originated from the visionary idea of Dr. Howard Smedley, an Oncologist based in Canterbury, who recognised the potential benefits of outdoor adventure activities for individuals facing cancer. Inspired by his experiences using outdoor activities for staff development, Dr. Smedley envisioned a similar approach to benefit his patients. Following a brainstorming session with Steve Gough and Charles Lyster over pints at the 'Roseneath' in Gillingham, Odyssey was conceived.

Despite its humble beginnings, Odyssey quickly gained momentum, with six months of meticulous research and planning culminating in the inaugural Odyssey course in September 1994. Designed to empower adults living with and beyond cancer, Odyssey's mission is to provide life-changing programs that enable participants to fully engage in work and play, harnessing their own resources to enhance their well-being.

Drawing on the transformative power of the outdoors, arts, and experiential challenges, Odyssey helps cancer survivors navigate the emotional and physical impacts of their illness. By fostering confidence, self-esteem, and physical activity, the charity supports participants in reclaiming control over their lives. Crucially, all Odyssey courses are offered free of charge, made possible through fundraising efforts, donations, and strategic partnerships.

Named after the epic Greek poem "The Odyssey," which chronicles the journey of the hero Odysseus, Odyssey Charity embodies the resilience and perseverance of its participants as they navigate their own cancer journeys. The charity's logo, featuring the Little Tern, symbolises the arduous yet rewarding nature of these journeys, mirroring the migratory patterns of the Little Tern from West Africa to Britain. Just as these terns endure and thrive on their long migrations, Odyssey participants are supported in their own enduring journeys through cancer.

Overall, Odyssey Charity stands as a beacon of hope and support for individuals facing cancer, offering them a pathway to resilience, healing, and renewed vitality amidst life's challenges.
